Before He Was Indicted, Sen. Ted Stevens Was ‘Tubed’ Posted by takepartblogger on July 29, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Ted Stevens, America’s longest-serving senator, just got indicted for concealing gifts related to renovations to his Alaska home.

If it’s true, it’s a shame. But I’ve been wringing my hands about the Republican senator for some time now. And not just over his “Bridge to Nowhere” scheme (which would have cost $400 million in taxpayer funds to build a bridge to two virtually uninhabited areas of Alaska — and symbolized the heights of ludicrous pork-barrel proposals).

No, the thing that really worried us about ol’ Ted (no kidding, he’s 84) was the fact that back in 2006, when he chaired the head of the Senate Commerce Committee, which, among other things, regulates the Internet, the guy didn’t appear to know the first thing about the Internet.

This came to light during a speech on the Senate floor in which Stevens, arguing against Net Neutrality, famously said the the Internet isn’t “like a dump truck.” Rather, it’s “a series of tubes.”

He compounded those quotes with others that I blogged about back in 2006, like…

  • “An internet was sent by my staff at 10 o’clock…”
  • “What happens to your own personal internet…?”

Taken together, those quotes betrayed such a feeble grasp of the Internet on Steven’s part that it inspired a host of satirical video reactions — including a Jon Stewart “Daily Show” segment and a techno music remix video — which you can see after the jump…
