Open Green Map: Charter the Green in Your Community Posted by Nicole Hughes on July 27, 2008 at 6:38 pm

In an earlier post about why we don’t do more to stop global warming, I wrote one of the main reasons is that the majority of Americans are trapped in a system that promotes overuse and overabundance. It’s not easy being green, which is why I love sites like Green Map, a social mapping site that can help people make more sustainable choices in their daily lives.

Open Green Map uses a layout style a la Google Maps that allows visitors around the world to charter green businesses, people, places and resources, write reviews and commentary about them, and view carbon impact indexes. You can access Open Green Map on your mobile to find the nearest organic salon, pet food store, green restaurant, or anything else you might be in the sustainable market for. Here’s more from EcoGeek:

The Green Map System has been going since 1995, creating over 350 maps for more than 50 countries that promote sustainable community development. But now, they’ve hit a new level of ecogeekiness by taking it online. I love this because we’ll be able to access this on our phones or palms while tooling around a new city--it takes info that is sometimes tough to find and puts it right at our eager little green finger tips. Plus, since it is interactive, the locals who really know their home can give the inside scoop--it’ll be like being with the green in-crowd wherever you are.

takepart and find out how to participate in the Green Map System.
