Estelle Getty: More Than Just A Golden Girl Posted by Wendy Cohen on July 22, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Estelle Getty passed away today at the age of 84 after losing a battle to Lewy body dementia. She will always be remembered as her Emmy-winning performance as Sophia Petrillo, the witty mother of Bea Arthur on “The Golden Girls.”  For seven years Sophia engaged in glorious repartee with her TV daughter, Dorthy Zbornak.

Even though Getty will always be remembered as Sophia, she played many wonderful and often motherly roles on both stage and screen.   And here are our top 10:

1) Stuart Little (1999) Getty was the voice of Grandma Estelle Little

2) “Torch Song Trilogy,” (1982) on Broadway as Harvey Fierstein’s mother.

3) Tootsie (1982) Getty played the role of “The Older Woman” This is one of my favorite movies and now i have to watch it to see if I could spot her.

4) Mannequin (1987) Getty was Claire Prince Timkin

5) Blossom In 1991 she made a guest appearance as Sophia Petrillo

6) Mad About You in 1997 she was a guest as Paul’s aunt.

7) The Nanny  in 1998 she played herself.

8 ) Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992) Getty was Sylvester Stallone’s mother, Tutti Bomowski

9) Mask (1985) Getty played the role of Evelyn, Cher’s mom

10) Copacabana (1985) Barry Manilow was Getty’s son  in this TV movie
