The State of Hawaii has enacted a new law requiring solar powered water heaters in all new homes starting in 2010. The installation of a solar water heater will be required to receive a building permit in the state.
Hawaii is currently more dependent on fossil fuels for its energy than any other state.  The legislation could eventually cut energy usage in the Aloha State by 30% once full implementation is reached.  However state officials and environmental advocates have even higher hopes for renewable sources on the islands.  The state has set a goal that at least 70% of energy sources must be renewable by the year 2030. “Achieving this goal is nearly impossible without widespread use of solar water heaters.” said Hawaii Sierra Club director Jeff Mikulina.
