Happy Canada Day! and Top 10 Films from Your Northern Neighbours Posted by Wendy Cohen on July 1, 2008 at 2:17 am

It’s Canada Day!! YAY!!! As a proud Montrealer, I am wearing red and white, listening to the Bare Naked Ladies and even changed my IM image to a little Canadian flag. (Except it is supposed to be animated but it isn’t working…insert joke here.)

In honor of this holiday, grab a may west, Tim Hortons coffee, some maple syrup, say zed instead of zee, use your garburator, and watch one of these extraordinary Canadian films (yes, we make movies.)

1) Barbarian Invasions

2) C.R.A.Z.Y

3) Water

4) The Corporation

5) My Left Breast

6) Ryan

7) The Sweet Hereafter

8 ) Nanook of the North

9) Away from Her

10) Slings and Arrows

And here is a clip from Rick Mercer (our Stephen Colbert) from his show, Talking to Americans

What are your favourite Canadian films, eh?

In honour of Canada Day I present my Ode to the flag!
I got my picture taken with Stockwell Day today!
Happy Birthday Canada, the true North!
Strong and Free??

Ode to our Canadian Flag
Written for Giant’s Head Elementary
Summerland, BC Canada

Be proud of our flag, with its red, white, and true.
Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson raised it for you.
The red maple leaf, white box, and red bars.
To honour our forefathers, who look down from the stars.
The people who lived here before white man came
Used the nectar of maple, the tree had earned fame.
The sweet sap they used for pleasure and life.
Our red maple leaf honours life without strife.
Red bars symbolize seas to shining sea,
And all in between, who aspire to be free!
Commonwealth King George V said red and white,
Were for Canada. We didn’t even have to fight!
When you see our flag, stand up so tall.
Then our Canadian flag will never fall.
