Hypermiling is kind of, what’s the word…crazy? Yeah. Crazy. That’s the word. The dedication to getting as much distance out of one gallon of gas possible seems kind of strange, but when you can get results like Jack Martin, the adjective that comes to mind is merely “impressive.” In this year’s Tour to the Shore hypermiling contest, which is a real event, Martin managed to get 124 miles out of one gallon of gas in an unmodified Honda Insight. Seriously.
Martin himself admits that the greatest hypermiler is Wayne Gerdes, who treehugger.com notes, “drove ‘2,254 miles on a single 13.7-gallon tank of gas during the Honda Insight Marathon in Oklahoma last year.’ That’s an average of 164.53 miles per gallon over the whole distance.” You can read a pretty tremendous article about Gerdes here. By the by, that picture with this post of of Gerdes’ odometer. Puts my Civic to shame.
While hypermiling at this level can become somewhat dangerous, you can takepart here and read the Top 5 Hypermiling Tips you can safely use yourself, compiled by our very own Jon Popham.

The car I am using for hypermiling would probably generate a few snickers. It is a 96 Chevy Lumina (3.1 liter V-6). Probably about twice the wieght of a Civic. However, I have noticed a significant difference using some of the safer techniques. The most effective seems to be simply driving more gently. The point is, no matter what vehicle you are driving, there are ways of improving fuel economy.
Some techinques are down right scarry! I think the first thing everybody needs to do is get to where they’re going safely. So relax, drive safely and enjoy driving past the gas station.
