Top 10 Films In Favor of Gun Control - Sorry NRA! Posted by Wendy Cohen on June 26, 2008 at 2:49 pm

The Supreme Court opened fire on gun control laws declaring that a sweeping ban on handguns in the nation’s capital violated the Second Amendment right to bear arms. In a 5-4 ruling, this landmark decision states that the Constitution protects an individual’s right to have a gun.

Wow. Is it just me or does this seem like an awful idea? Here are 10 films that make a strong case for gun control:

1) Bowling for Columbine

Michael Moore’s controversial documentary about the roots of America’s predilection for gun violence

2) Bullets in the Hood: A Bed-Stuy Story

Terrence Fisher, a teen living in a housing project in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, had seven of his friends shot and killed by a gun. Terrence is not a gang member or a drug dealer he is just a normal teenager who likes making hip-hop with his friends. What could Terrence do to stop gun violence in Bed-Stuy before losing another friend, or his own life? Terrence and a fellow teen filmmaker, Daniel Howard, picked up a camera to tell the story about gun violence in Bed-Stuy.

3) A History of Viloence

A mild-mannered man becomes a local hero through an act of violence, which sets off repercussions that will shake his family to its very core

4) Unforgiven

Retired Old West gunslinger William Munny reluctantly takes on one last job, with the help of his old partner and a young man.

5) The Outsiders

When two poor greasers, Johnny, and Ponyboy are assaulted by a vicious gang, the socs, and Johnny kills one of the attackers, tension begins to mount between the two rival gangs, setting off a turbulent chain of events.

6) The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

A senator, who became famous for killing a notorious outlaw, returns for the funeral of an old friend and tells the truth about his deed

7) Every Mother’s Son

In the late 1990s, three victims of police brutality made headlines around the country: Amadou Diallo, the young West African man whose killing sparked intense public protest; Anthony Baez, killed in an illegal choke-hold; and Gary (Gidone) Busch, a Hasidic Jew shot and killed outside his Brooklyn home. “Every Mother’s Son” tells of the victims’ three mothers who came together to demand justice and accountability.

8 ) Funny Games

In this deconstruction of the way violence is portrayed in the media, a family settles into its vacation home, which happens to be the next stop for a pair of young, articulate, white-gloved serial killers on an excursion through the neighborhood.

And some other recommendations:

11) American Gun
AMERICAN GUN is a powerful series of interwoven storylines that bring to light how the proliferation of guns in America dramatically affect and shape the every day lives of its citizens.

I believe this Supreme Court decision simply reflects the consensus opinion in this country today. Restrictions and requirements are still possible and permissable.

My nominee for the #1 movie in favor of gun control: “The Terminator.” I recall being shocked at the blatant disregard for human life shown in this film (presumably allowed because the killer was a non-human). I have to wonder how much this particular film, seen widely by young audiences, influenced those responsible for the mass killings in high schools and on college campuses.

I’m with Chris Rock. If bullets were priced to be outrageously expensive, gun crimes would go down. Of course, knife crimes would go up, though.

According to this article, Terrence Fisher ” …had seven of his friends shot and killed by a gun.” No, he had seven of his friends killed by some thug using a gun. They were killed by a person, it doesn’t matter what tool was used.

If bullets were outrageously expensive, I think the bad guys would still be able to get them. If some psycho wants to kill, do you think expensive bullets will stop him? He will just steal the bullets or find another means.

The Supreme Court just agreed that the 2nd Amendment means what it says. Nowhere else in the Bill of Rights is the term “the people” ever understood to mean anything other than every US citizen. Maybe in the 1st Amendment, the framers really meant to say that the government has the power of free speech. I don’t think so. One primary reason to arm the populace was to prevent a corrupt governement from taking over. If the corrupt gov’t is the only entity with guns, who can stop them? For a brief refresher on the effects of gun confiscation, see Stalin and Mao.

People have been killing each other since they first walked the earth. Guns don’t make it any easier to kill someone. The mental state of an individual is what causes someone to kill another person. Human life is given such little value these days. That is the real problem. It starts with how people are raised. The problems are way deeper than movies or guns.

If some folks are raised so they can’t tell the difference between movies and real life, they have deeper issues. I’m a legal gun owner. I’ve seen plenty of violent movies, yet have never had the inclinition to go out and blow someone away. I was raised to value human life. Now, if I or my family were being threatened, I would not hesitate to use lethal force, wheter it’s with a gun or some other means.

I know you’ve all heard this before, and it is a pretty tired argument, but IF YOU OUTLAW GUNS, ONLY OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS. See the recent criminal history of Washington DC for an idea of how well banning a weapon works.

By the way, Ted Kennedy’s car has killed more people than my guns. :P
