In this age of carbon concerns, some cities and towns are wondering if banning the drive-thru is the next logical step in the battle against global warming. Less idling cars means less carbon emissions, and despite their hearty Americana symbolism, cars are largely responsible for the air pollution problems we need to counteract. Madison, Wisconsin is currently embroiled in a debate on whether or not to allow a new Starbucks drive-thru to be developed in an already heavily-congested area of town. Several cities in Canada have recently moved to ban drive-thrus for coffee shops and stand alone fast food restaurants, and other cities in California like San Luis Obispo and Davis have imposed restrictions on drive-thrus as well.
