We rely on honey bees for one-third of our food supply and sadly honey bees are disappearing at an astounding rate which could cause a major food crisis. In an effort to educate consumers about this potential risk, Hagen Dazs has created Help The Honey Bees campaign featuring a site filled with everything you need to know about the honey bee crisis. Additionally Haagen Dazs has created a new flavor called Vanilla Honey Bee as a “tribute to these essential creatures.” When you purchase this new flavor a portion of the profits will go to honey bee and sustainable research programs at Pennsylvania State University and the University of California at Davis.

I am a contractor for Nestle. We own Haagen-Dazs. This morning, the employees received a package containing information on honey bees. The information stated that a portion of the proceeds of the sale of all honey bee-dependent Haagen-Daaz flavors will go to UC Davis and Penn State for research in CCD. I live in Glendale, California. I live in an old (1932) Spanish house that has a wall surrounding the entry courtyard. The wall is hollow. For the past five years, bees have been returning to this wall around March. I have had the holes cemented, but they always manage to find a way inside the wall. Unfortunately, I have had to “get rid” of them. I was told that I could have as many as 40,000 bees in the wall if I did nothing. This year, there were only about 30 bees. Please advise me what I could do differently. I, too, love bees. I understand the crisis and do not want to be contributing to the problem.
First off, the bees may not be returning but rather emerging. In cold climates bees will huddle together to preserve the hive over the winter and come out when it warms up. Search for your local beekeepers association and contact them asking for help. I strongly encourage you to go to their meeting to learn more. I first heard about CCD in April and became a beekeeper 6 weeks later. I firmly believe that the preservation of honeybees is in the hands of hobbyists - join us!
