Top 10 Ways to Green Up Your Sex Life Posted by Nicole Hughes on April 9, 2008 at 1:52 pm

These top 10 ways to ‘green up’ your sex life show that even do-gooders are allowed to be bad in the bedroom without damaging their health or the environment. You try to buy fair trade and organic when you can, you take the subway instead of cabs, and you almost always say no to plastic bags. You work, live and play with a better world in mind - don’t let the magic stop when you’re beneath the sheets. Forget the carcinogenic lubricants and non-biodegradable toys topping off our landfills. You and your partner(s) can enjoy a fabulously fun AND healthy romp with this eco-kinky arrangement below. Be sure to leave a comment if there’s anything you’d like us to add!

1) Sustainably Sexy Lingerie

Flaunt your sexy self and your concern for the environment in these fairly-traded and organic fabric lingerie sets from Adili. If you’re in the market for something a little more risque, Enamore offers some very cute vintage-inspired lingerie made from natural and organic fibers like hemp and cotton, as well as recycled vintage materials.

2) Vegan Condoms

Safety first! Condomi condoms contain no animal derivatives and have the Vegan Society stamp of approval. Made with natural, biodegradable latex and non-spermicidal lubricant. They’ve also either met or surpassed global quality accreditations. In English? They work just as well as conventional condoms, but without all the chemicals and cruelty we don’t need. Comes in three styles - Nature, Very Thin, and Stimulating. Don’t forget to dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way!

3) Natural Lubricants

Back away from the K-Y Jelly! Conventional lubricants contain toxic ingredients that have been linked to the proliferation of cancer cells, yeast infections, and even infertility. Yes Yes Yes offers a great alternative high-performance lubricant made from pure, natural and organic ingredients - no parabens, glycerin, hormones, silicon or petroleum products. Comes in water and oil based. For more information on the dangers of using traditional lubricants, click here.

4) Spank Me!

Have you been a baaaad environmentalist? Forget to recycle that take-out container last night? Bend over and take your punishment like a good little greenie with this classic wooden paddle made with materials from a sustainable source by a fair trade project in India. If you prefer something a little more Mad Max-ish, the Recycled Rubber Direct Slap and the Standard Recycled Rubber Whip from Earth Erotics might be just the trick for punishing your partner without punishing the environment. Both products are approved by Co-Op America.

5) Organic Massage Oils

A slow, sensual massage can put almost anyone in the mood, whether you’re giving or receiving. Say ‘yes’ to a healthy evening of seduction and say ‘no thanks’ to insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides that are found in traditional oils, and can be absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. GreenFeet offers a large assortment of 100% certified organic oils that come in a variety of scents to please any body part.

6) Solar Vibrator

They probably don’t sell a lot of these in Seattle, but this solar powered vibrator sounds great to bring along on a sexy camping trip, or any other venue sans electrical outlet. Leave the panel out in the sun for five hours, and voila! Try not to spend all day in the tent ;) Check out some of these other alternative vibrators at Blowfish.

7) Twisted Monk Bondage Starter Kit

This kinky bondage starter kit made from 100% organic hemp rope will leave your partner at your mercy. Made using fair trade practices, vegan certified, and allergen- free. Great for couples experimenting with rope play for the first time. The kit includes three pieces of finished rope (1 x 30′ and 2 x 20′) as well as a pair of safety scissors. Comes in red, black and natural colors.

8 ) Smart Balls

These multi-use balls massage, stimulate and train in ways I’ll leave to your own sordid imagination. They’re made from hygienically-safe elastomed, and are phthalate free. Elastomer toys are a healthy alternative to those made with PVC plastics and jellies. If you’re unfamiliar with the health and environmental risks posed by high concentrations of phthalate plasticizers, be sure to read this warning issued by Greenpeace about toxic adult toys.

9) Fun in the Tub

Light some candles, put on some smooth jazz, and pour in the bubbles! Socially responsible, vegan and cruelty-free organic bath products from Pristine Planet are an excellent addition to any intimately sudsy night in the tub with your significant other. These solid bubble bath bars from LUSH are also pretty fun, and come in an array of intoxicating scents - simply crumble them into the water for a perfect tub filled with aromatic bubbles.

10) Fair Trade Aphrodisiacs

Speaking of bubbly, champagne and chocolate are the perfect aphrodisiacal twosome if you’re in the mood for something dangerously delectable. These organic fairly-traded gourmet chocolate bars support small-scale cocoa and sugar farmer cooperatives in the Dominican Republic, Peru, Paraguay and Costa Rica. Don’t forget to match them up with these organic champagnes and sparkling wines.

The Hulk, She-Hulk, Green Hornet, et al., have been ‘doing it green’ for years. M&M® wants to stay involved with greening up on your sex life by having you feed your partner their green candies…. They’re a proven aphrodisiac, afterall.

Earth Erotics deserves a plug-in here. They’re an environmentally conscious green business:

Check out #4. I mentioned their eco-floggers and linked to the site. Cool company.

Whatever results in not having babies is pretty green when one considers the amount of resources a human needs in a lifetime. That ultimately is what is driving our consumption fueled environmental destruction. Fun is the remedy.
