Leonardo DiCaprio Does Everything for the Environment, Ever Posted by Andy Kondrat on April 9, 2008 at 2:55 pm

All squinty and whatnotComing on the heels of our news that DVD release of Leonardo DiCaprio’s The 11th Hour documentary (released yesterday!) was being made out of biodegradable materials, we bring you the information that DiCaprio has also purchased an eco-friendly apartment in Manhattan that’s built to be kind to the environment.

Per one of myriad websites carrying the exact same story:

“The Departed star has paid an unknown amount for the luxury pad in the revolutionary 263-unit Riverhouse complex, which was built with non-pollutant materials and solar-powered energy.

DiCaprio’s new home, which overlooks the Hudson River, comes with programmable thermostats, a 24-hour fresh-filtered air system, a dog spa, media cafe and rooftop green landscaping.” [Fox6]

Now, I have literally no idea what a dog spa is, or how it helps the environment in any way, but it certainly sounds cool, doesn’t it? For all of you out there that are interesting in following in DiCaprio’s footsteps (aside from starring in The Beach), you can here by finding out how to green your own home. Or, if you’re like me and think it’s more fun to live in a place where you don’t actually have to do your own maintenance, you can here and make your apartment more eco-friendly.

Oh. And also. DiCaprio’s not done yet. He’s asking you all to go to his website, and take a pledge you’ll no longer use plastic bags. Because, you know, they’re bad, and reusable totes are way cooler, and often have fun designs on them. and sign his pledge. And don’t use plastic bags. Per the pledge.

So, let’s recap. DiCaprio has helped create a movie that raises awareness of the status of our planet and made the DVD of said film environmentally conscious, set a fine example by moving into a living space that reduces his footprint, and is leading a crusade of sorts to try and stop unnecessary waste. Also, he was in The Aviator, which has nothing to do with the environment, but was a pretty sweet movie. What with the airplanes and the John C. Reilly and the like.
