Eco-Friendly Entertainment Posted by Giulia Rozzi on February 22, 2008 at 2:19 pm

According to a recent UCLA study, California’s film industry is the state’s second largest polluter. (Next to the oil industry, adding insult to injury.)

And the AP newswire reported: “No amount of public service announcements or celebrities driving hybrid cars can mask the fact that movie and TV production is a gritty industrial operation, consuming enormous amounts of power to feed bright lights, run sophisticated cameras, and feed a cast of thousands.”

But fear not, many actors, actresses, directors and producers are trying to help environmental efforts and the Dailygreen.com has a wonderful article giving credit to many of the green moves being made in Hollywood.

Some are using humor to spread the green love like in this hilarious short by will Ferrell and friends (NOTE: this video has language and content that may be offensive to some):

And others are doing their green part by making significantly earth friendly workplace changes such as:

  • “The Matrix” movie sets saw a whopping 97.5% of materials recycled; its steel and lumber were reused for low-income housing in Mexico
  • Producers of Fox’s “24″ announced that they would secure wind and solar energy to power up their soundstages, use biodiesel fuel for set cars and onset generators, and recycle everything possible.
  • NBC TV went green for a week, with shows from “Scrubs” to “Singing Bee” spreading some kind of eco-message. David Schwimmer’s hysterical turn as eco-hero Greenzo on “30 Rock” was must-see, as was Steve Carell (Michael on “The Office”) braving the wild on a survivalist camping trip. Contestants on “The Biggest Loser” competed for a Ford Hybrid and “Scrubs” janitor (actor Neil Flynn) vied to become the hospital’s environmental officer.

And the list goes on.

You don’t have to be a Hollywood hotshot to go green, for more tips on caring for the planet check out http://www.thedailygreen.com/going-green/

The film people should get their acts together!
If they do, they will have the power to get the rest of us to act right along with them!
We will all have to learn to live with less, but most of what we think we need has been marketed to us.
We want what we see, whether we NEED it or not.
That’s how marketing makes millions.
Human nature.
