This Valentine’s day, as I promised readers last week, you don’t have to choose between buying your loved one a diamond necklace made by enslaved children, or a hemp necklace made under humane conditions (probably in Berkeley). And if you’ve seen Blood Diamond, whose trailer is above, or Gem Slaves, or Congo’s Curse, both made by IRIN, I have a feeling you’re not going to want to taint your valentine with blood-made jewelry. So here is a list of 10 great Valentine’s Day jewelry gifts that will let you glitter guilt-free. Make sure you come back tomorrow to check out my next top 10 Valentines Gifts with Heart list. For now, let’s talk about jewelry, starting with the most affordable and working our way up:

  1. The Men’s Leather Cuff Bracelet from Global Exchange’s Fair Trade store is made sweat-free in Thailand and costs only $15 so you won’t have to sweat over the price of the gift or the circumstances under which it was made.
  2. The Red Tie Necklace is made by the Tara cooperative in Deli, India and available at Ten Thousand Villages for only $16. Beautiful, unique, made of sparkling red glass beads, the red tie necklace will make your valentine want to tie the knot with you.
  3. The Pearly Button & Bead Necklace is hand made from mother of pearl by the Tara Fair Trade project in Deli, India. It’s only $18. Your valentine will look look cute as a button, when she puts on the necklace, and flashes her pearly whites in a huge smile.
  4. Heart pearl earrings are Indonesia’s traditional present for wedding anniversaries and you can find these earrings, made of silver and sea water pearls, for only $26. (Of course, if you’re commitment phobic, let’s just hope she’s not an expert on Indonesian marital rituals, otherwise she might read too much into them.)
  5. The silver gemstone heart locket, also made in Indonesia, and comes in amethyst, moonstone, garnet, topaz and perifot for only $32.95. This locket will be the key to opening your valentine’s heart.
  6. The Opal & Pearl Cluster Earring are made in Peru at the Alpa (which means “earth” in Peru’s indigenous Quechua) artisans collective and are on sale for $44. Your valentine will love you for loving her and loving Mother “Alpa.”
  7. If you’re planning on popping the question to a lady who thinks a kiss on the hand may be quite continental, but thinks diamonds (and gold) are a girl’s best friend, then start the marriage off auspiciously and guilt-free with a Recycled Gold Comfort Fit Ban from Green Karat Jewelry.
  8. The 18K White Gold 6mm Flat Matte Comfort Fit for men, made out of renewed gold will leave you feeling comfortable with your choice in mate and ring.
  9. The 18K White Gold Pave Eternity Band is made from conflict-free diamonds and is only $875 at Brilliant Earth. You can’t have a conflict-free relationship if it starts off with conflict, or a conflict diamond ring. This way you won;t feel conflicted about your marriage, your purchase, or your conscience.
  10. The 8K Yellow Gold Diamond Eternity Band is another conflict free option, although for $8,400, you may feel conflicted about the price. If you’re going to splurge, this is a great option. If you wind up bankrupt, at least you won’t be morally bankrupt.

Hopefully you’re inspired to buy some one of these top 10 guilt free gifts. But if you still want to take action, you can! Global Witness, Amnesty International, and Blood Diamond the movie have teamed up and made a great website that let’s you

  • by using the film to raise awareness in your school or community
  • by downloading and using the Blood Diamond curriculum guide
  • by downloading and following the guide to buying conflict free diamonds blair
