One of the best and most inspiring documentaries I saw this year was Jim Brown’s Pete Seeger : The Power of Song. Pete Seeger is a folk singer, who starting in the late 40’s, wrote some amazing folks songs, while encouraging people to change the world, both with their voice and their actions.
He has also faced a lot of controversy in his lifetime, from interactions with the Communist party in the 50’s. He went on to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, but would admit no wrong-doing, as all he had done with fight for workers and African-Americans to have rights. He would be banned from appearing on television and for a long time he did not.
The film looks at Seeger’s life of activism and music through conversations with Seeger himself and his family and friends but also by looking at archival footage of his performances and life. It comes together to weave a portrait of a simple man who truly believes that the little things make a difference and sticking by what you believe, even when it isn’t easy is vital. He also proved that sometimes all you need to make a point is spirit and a banjo and a positive attitude.
I haven’t felt so inspired by a movie in a long time - Seeger helped me to realize that even though change may not come quick, it does come, you just have to be patient, work hard and not be afraid to sing once in awhile. Don’t worry if you missed the movie’s small theatrical run, lucky for everyone, it is going to air on PBS as part of their American Master’s series on February 27th (save the date!).
I recommend you watch the trailer below to get excited(the first video) and spend the rest of your day doing what you do, while listening to Seeger do his thing on the rest of the videos. And of course,
to learn more about some of Seeger’s environmental work.
