I’m sure by now you’ve seen the endless Axe Body Spray ads that depict women throwing themselves at men who wear the apparently irresistible Axe scent. Some think they are funny. Others find them infuriating.
Well now Axe has a new ad out and this time it’s political. It shows two images of Hillary Clinton, one in which she wears a Obama button
and one in which she wears a McCain button.

I first saw the ad in my NY Metro paper this morning and while it is unclear as to what the makers of Axe are specifically suppose to mean, I still felt disturbed.
I interpreted the ad to mean that the makers of Axe believe their scent is so powerful it will make any woman, even Hillary give up her campaign and sway towards make candidates who wear that body spray. Even worse, I thought it may be implying that women can only be political supporters and not president. Please, I’d really like to know what this ad means? It must mean something poiniant as I imagine such a large ad space cost Axe quite a bit of cash.
Oddly enough the company, Unilever that created the ad with Axe boasts on its site that “as a multi-local multinational we aim to play our part in addressing global environmental and social concerns through our own actions.”
Let’s just hope I’m interpreting these ads incorrectly or else sexism will have to be added to Unilever’s list of “social concerns.”
For a good periodical read that’s anti-sexist ads check out BITCH magazine.
