Watching The L Word on Showtime on demand reminded me of the great adage, immortalized by Matthew Mcconoughy in Dazed and Confused: “That’s what I like about high school girls: I keep getting older, they stay the same age.” Except “what I like about L Word girls” is “they keep getting older, they stay the same” or as beautiful” or even more beautiful.” But the L word does more than just make its stars youthful and beautiful. In the case of the four “thespians” discussed below, it actually resuscitates the dead careers of former it girls, turning them into L women, taking years off their lives, and giving them new leases (or contracts) on life.
So here are my top 4 tripple L’s (Longevity L-Word Ladies.)
1) As foxy today as she was as Foxy Brown, Pan Grier, as Kit Porter the struggling alcoholic, bi-curious, cool club-owning, and drink throwing “F_ _ _ _ you, mutha _ _ _ _ _” emotional, singer belts “Ëœem out and knocks em dead with her soulful voice and banging curves. This shapely “fox” is such a hot commodity, she has to fight “Ëœem ( straight men, lesbians, and trans) off with a” drink.
2) Another classic actress whose renaissance was made possible by the L Word, Cybill Shepherd comes out of the acting closet and into the role of Phyllis Kroll the erstwhile straight married with children high powered intellectual dean, who comes out later in life, but is making up for lost time. Catching lots of L action and catching up on her L words, she’s a quick study. (Phyliss just learned the word
“u-haul” : to move in with your girlfriend in a u-haul, on your 3rd date. And now knows that the P T in LGBT, means trans, not tentative) And whether she’s having her first time with Alice, being wined and dined by BLOC (Big Lawyer/Lesbian on Campus) Joyce (the HILARIOUS Jane Lynch), or trying to go out with Joyce’s friend, Cybil’s not moonlighting at being sexy. She is sexy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The next 2 LLLs win the SS Award, named after Susan Sarandon, for getting more attractive as you age. But we’ve run out of time, so check back next week, for the next LLL episode. To be continued.
Like these beautiful L Word Ladies? Care about Lesbian, gay, bi, and tentative, I mean trans rights? Then check out the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, which works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence.
