Tunes that Teach Posted by Giulia Rozzi on January 24, 2008 at 12:12 pm

To many music is very important. Even my two-year old niece is a bit of a musical snob. She quips “No! No! No!” when an unfavorable tune comes on the radio and then rocks out when a quality song plays. (Usually I agree with her selections. What can I say? My family has good taste.)

Not only is music fun for kids, but it also helps them learn. Just take the classic ABC’s song. If it weren’t for that I would never have remember that P comes before Q.

According to the Journal for Music in Education many schools are now finding ways to rethink the role of music and music-integrated learning as a key element and guiding principal for ongoing (educational) reform.

While music is an amazing teaching tool for kids, some children’s songs are pretty unbearable for us adults and also for some kids. Like I said, at two-years old my niece already has taste and hates some of the folksy, outdated kids songs we’ve played for her. Instead of forcing the same old songs down her throat, why not respect her desire for modern music with albums like Alphabet Rockers?

Alphabet Rockers is the first release for the label School Time MusicTM. The record label was formed in 2007 in San Francisco, CA by Harvard graduate and professional singer Kaitlin McGaw and 4 Non Blondes drummer/author/music teacher Dawn Richardson to create and produce high-quality, cutting-edge music for a shared learning entertainment experience for kids, family, and teachers. With a sound and lyric unlike other kids entertainment music, Alphabet Rockers has found instant fans in teachers who love the fact that the songs match their curriculum and give them street cred’ with young learners. All songs have been written with teacher advisors, so the content is tailored for the classroom. But, these contagious tunes offer a great way for parents and families to rock out together.

I’m not a teacher. I’m not a mom. Yet I can’t help but enjoy a lil’ Shape Rap every now and then. To me, that says a lot about Alphabet Rockers universal appeal.
