One of the things I love about the internet how it allows people to actively engage in debates and share information. For example, Jeannette Catsoulis wrote a review in The New York Times about the film Opera Jawa.Jonathan Rosenbaum head critic at the Chicago Reader, read her review and decided to blog about his distaste with it. Then GreenCine Daily linked to Rosenbaum’s post in their discussion of Opera Jawa. Following which, a New York City movie blog, The Reeler, also wrote about Rosenbaum’s piece. And now I am writing about it!Not to mention all the folks who have commented on all of the above posts/articles, this is my favorite comment thus far in this e-mail chain:
I have been at spirited internal arms w/ Mr. Rosenbaum for the last little bit (was I dreaming when the wily one called Nashville a hateful sub-Emilio-Estevez-does-’68? (shudder, rising bile)). I want to thank the man right here and right now for this utterly a propos pistol-whipping of Catsoulis and her fiendish ilk. Now if you could get one of yr literary critic, debutante, Tom Wolfe skarv’d friends to please kneecap Michiko Kakutani over at that same Peckinpah Mexican-w/-a-knife-in-his-teeth paper perhaps Manhattan will gain some karma (if, alas, not market leverage). [JPW]
What makes all of this so great is that not only did someone review a small, foreign film (a miracle of sorts), but now there is a dialogue about what good film criticism is, and the merits of the film itself. There should be more of this!!!So check out the above links and have some fun. And maybe
and join the blogosphere yourself. Also when you’re done, you should watch the trailer below:
