Although I didn’t need another reason to love Ricky Gervais, the genius behind The Office, Extras and Idiot Abroad, I fell in love with him all over again after learning that he’s a major force in a new global campaign against animal testing with an organization called Cruelty Free International.
“I am delighted to support the launch of Cruelty Free International, the exciting global campaign to end the use of animals in product testing,” Gervais said in a statement. “Animal testing for cosmetics is still allowed in most of the world. That means thousands of animals can continue to die for the sake of a new shampoo. We urgently need a worldwide ban on this cruel and unnecessary suffering.”
Created by the British anti-vivisection organization BUAV, Cruelty Free International will work with governments, regulators, companies and other organizations toward a complete ban on animal testing.
CFI Chief Executive, Michelle Thew said, “We are delighted to receive the backing of Ricky Gervais for this exciting and dynamic organization. The time has come for a concerted effort to finally end animal testing for cosmetics worldwide. Cruelty Free International will lead this global effort.”
Last month, L'Oreal, Avon, and Mary Kay announced that they were resuming animal testing on rats, dogs, rabbits, and others in order to expand their brands into China, which still requires the barbaric tests.
