Thanks to Animal Planet, Superbowl Sunday has something to offer those of us for whom human football is a nonsensical blur of running, jumping and falling. On Sunday February 5, Puppy Bowl 2012  will showcase the talents of 59 playful puppies ambling, tumbling and tackling in a spectacle of floppy, unpredictable adorability. (And let us not forget the antics of charming felines chasing feathers, strings and each other in the Kitten Halftime Show).

Puppy Bowl isn’t just a game of head-exploding cuteness, but as Huffington Post reports, the pre-recorded show helps place the pups and kittens in forever homes.

This year, Animal Planet worked with Petfinder.com to choose animals from 32 shelters and rescue groups across the country from Mississippi to Vermont. After the game, all of the animals found permanent families.

Dogs like Anthony, a pitbull mix , who began his life as the son of a stray dog living in the woods. Donna Beach, owner of All Star Pet Rescue, found Anthony’s mother just before she was to give birth to a new litter. A few months later, Donna applied for Puppy Bowl VIII. Anthony, and his friends Ray and Gracie were chosen. At the taping, Karen Luberto and her 9-year-old son met Anthony, the little black puppy with the soft brown eyes.

"We weren't ready for a puppy," said Karen. "But then my son met Anthony. They just bonded immediately. That was it."

Puppy Bowl airs Sunday February 5 from 3-5 EST time on Animal Planet.
