Taiji Slaughter Begins

Typhoon's wrath only delays dolphin killing.

While the Japanese sea town of Taiji held funerals for residents killed by the weekend onslaught of Typhoon Talas, so-called hunters were at work less than a block away, slaughtering a pod of Risso’s dolphins.

Leilani Munter, of the Earth Island Institute’s Save Japan Dolphins reports:

I felt so much sadness for the people of Taiji, who were clearly distraught over the loss of family and friends—and that only added to the sadness I felt for the innocent dolphins whose lives were stolen today by a handful of dolphin killers. It was a horrific day of misery, no matter which direction you turned.

As the dolphins were being killed, personnel from the Japan Coast Guard stood between the slaughter and the Cove Monitor activists who were taking photographs to document the “hunt.”

The brutal destruction of penned marine mammals is scheduled to continue tomorrow morning.
