Laurie David wants to talk about supper. “Your family is whomever you are sitting down to dinner with,” says the eco-activist, whose book, The Family Dinner: Great Ways to Connect with Your Kids, One Meal at a Time, is a celebration of the oft-overlooked ritual. “It could be your kids or your friends.”

David—who produced An Inconvenient Truth and launched the Stop Global Warming College Tour with Sheryl Crow—is indefatigable when it comes to feeding people. On November 8, she cohosts a fundraiser in Los Angeles for Common Threads, an organization devoted to educating at-risk kids about nutrition. Chefs like Stefan Richter and Neal Fraser will be on hand serving bites. To buy a ticket and suport the cause, click here. David will hand you a napkin.

My favorite place in the world is… Sitting on my tush in my veggie garden. I grow kale, carrots, sweet potatoes, parsnips, arugula, everything.

If I could change the world, I would start with… Shutting down all the old, dirty coal plants in the world and replacing them with clean, renewable energy.

My last random act of kindness was… Sneaking into someone’s car to turn off their engine when they were inside a store. I was helping that person and the planet.

My favorite green product is… Glass Ball jars. I use them for storing leftovers so I don’t have to use Saran Wrap. I also use them for cooking and even drinking from them.

It would be easier to be green if only… Kermit the Frog hadn’t sung that stupid song.

Right now I’m addicted to… Kohlrabi, a root vegetable somewhere between a turnip and a radish. It’s so delicious, sliced thin with a little bit of salt.

Right now I’m avoiding… Meat. I’ve been avoiding it for two years now for health reasons and because it’s completely unsustainable for the planet. In the old days, we had it three times a week. Today people are eating it three times a day.

My superhero power would be… An ability to suck out all the chemicals in the environment.

Our next President should focus on… Global warming.

My eco rule of thumb is... Any one person can’t do everything, but everyone can do something.

My last eco faux pas was… Eating out-of-season blueberries.

Next on my life to-do list is… Take a poetry appreciation class and learn how to read it better. When your kids are really little, it’s such a powerful thing to teach them a few lines and have them recite it at the dinner table.

The Good Life is TakePart’s weekly probe into the mind of a fascinating person.
