Model Chrissy Teigen Celebrates Stretch Marks in New Instagram Photo
It’s easy to mistake the images on Chrissy Teigen’s well-curated Instagram feed for those in a high-end food magazine: a quintet of lightly seared scallops in a stainless-steel pan, a pile of perfectly grilled chicken satay scattered with scallions, a cutting board dressed with fresh Vietnamese rolls and leafy greens. But one recent image on Teigen’s account is not like the others.
In it, the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model is not smirking playfully with a plate of food, nuzzling up to husband John Legend, or striking a pose on an awards-show red carpet, as she’s apt to do. Instead, the image is a selfie Teigen snapped while looking down at her bare thighs. The caption reads: “Bruises from bumping kitchen drawer handles for a week,” followed by three words that elicited a huge response: “Stretchies say hi!”
The 29-year-old’s “stretchies” comment was reminiscent of Pink’s recent reclamation of “squishy” to describe her post-baby belly. While it’s obvious that skin can be both stretchy and squishy, it’s also somehow revelatory coming from the social media feeds of celebrities, whose images are so often retouched.
Teigen often uses humor to call attention to her portrayal in the media. When she appeared topless—and strangely airbrushed to hide her nipples—on a GQ magazine cover last summer, for example, she joked about the presumed photoshopping. “I have no nipples,” she tweeted. “I draw them on with sharpies each morning and sometimes forget.”
Speaking about a red-carpet shot from the Golden Globes in January, Teigen admitted on Instagram that she opted not to wear Spanx because “it felt wrong tricking you.” There doesn’t appear to be any trickery in the photo of Teigen’s stretchies either—and her fans are praising her for it.
