Yesterday it was sandwiches; today, pasta. Identity politics and carbohydrates appear to be on a crash course this week. Spaghetti may not be as significant a symbol in the gay rights struggle as sandwiches (and kitchen labor) are for feminism, but the president of Barilla pasta, Guido Barilla, has made it clear that he’s not down with the Modern Family image of family structure.
America Blog reports Barilla told an Italian radio show that “We won’t include gays in our ads, because we like the traditional family.” He added, “If gays don’t like it, they can always eat another brand of pasta. Everyone is free to do what they want, provided it doesn’t bother anyone else.”
Problem being, that kind of bigoted thinking bothers a whole lot of people.
Following the rote script of the Public Figure Who Says Offensive Things, Barilla released a statement to clarify the intention of his comments. Because of course he doesn’t hate gays!
“With reference to statements made yesterday, I apologize if my words have generated controversy or misunderstanding, or if they have hurt the sensibilities of some people. In the interview I simply wanted to highlight the central role of the woman in the family.”
Because without an Italian mother in the kitchen, who is going to
make the sandwiches cook the pasta?
