In the fictional world of The Hunger Games, inhabitants of a dystopian society struggle daily to feed their familes. Unfortunately, the same fate affects nearly one in seven men and women worldwide. To raise awareness of the seriousness of our global hunger crises, the high-profile cast of this wildly anticipated film have joined up with The World Food Programme (WFP) and Feeding America.
All three of the movie’s stars—Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson—appear in a video urging fans to learn more about the problem of hunger across the globe. Fans who visit the site can take a hunger-related quiz and are encouraged to visit Facebook to learn more and donate.
“We want to tap into that excitement...if all of us did just one small thing to fight hunger, we could end hunger around the world," says Nancy Roman, WFP's Director of Communications. "We are deeply grateful for the support of Suzanne Collins, who writes as though she understands hunger in the world, as well as Lionsgate and The Hunger Games cast—who have the power to change lives as they feed people worldwide.”
How can you help? Consider donating to the cause.
For just $5, the organization can provide a child with a month’s worth of meals in school. As the WFP explains, “School meals mean that more kids—especially girls—are enrolled in school and stay in school, giving them the chance to build a better future for themselves and their communities.”
