New Starbucks Cup Is Bigger Than Your Stomach

January 18, 2011

If you need a 31-ounce caramel macchiato to kick off your day, you might want to consider sleeping more.

The newly released "Trenta" size at Starbucks is 11 ounces (325 mil) larger than the Venti, the coffee chain's largest cup size before this latest addition.

If that sounds like a gut bomb, you're right. An illustration from National Post shows that the Trenta will max out the capacity of the average tum, pushing it 16 mil beyond its natural state.

The drink debuts in 14 U.S. cities on January 18 and will be available for overconsumption to the masses at all Starbucks locations by May 3.

Let's just hope they're using organic milk?

Iced Coffee and Iced Tea are the only beverages that can be ordered in the Trenta size. There are no trenta sized caramel macchiatos, lattes, etc. Unless the consumer alters the drink with sweeteners the beverage is still less than 100 calories.

The article author misunderstands(?) her sources. The 900 ml average stomach size is the EMPTY size. Stomachs stretch - that's how they work. Just below that it says "Maximum Capacity: 2000-4000 ml." If HER stomach is maximum 900 ml., that doesn't mean everyone's is. A 1945 paper placed max size then at 1 to 2 liters from one source and 1600-1700 ml. from another, and people have gotten bigger since then. My Dad was 5'8", I'm 5'11" and my youngest son is 6'2"+. So it's clear to me the 2000 to 4000 milliliter size is the range for the full stomach today, not 900 ml. The 1945 document: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1473711/?page=1

I don't know too many people that buy a coffee and then drink it alll down at once or even in a few minutes. It usually takes a while to drink one. It is not like you are going to buy one of these huge coffees and suck it right down instantly and blow out your stomach. Your're going to take a while to drink it. I sometimes buy an iced venti caramel macchiato and refrigerate half of it for the next morning. If you don't like it don't buy it. If enough people don't buy it they'll stop selling it.

This is wrong on so many levels. If you look at any ancient medicine, like Ayurveda or Chinese Medicine, they all recommend eating only to between 60 and 75% full. It's so much healthier for the human body. And what about the caloric impact of this super-sizing? If a Grande Cafe Mocha (with 2% milk) has 260 calories, that means that the new Trenta size would have nearly 500 calories! That's as many as you should have in an entire meal. In an age where there is more and more concern about obesity, this kind of of marketing stunt is atrocious.

suggest going into more detail about why that's a bad thing. what happens if a person drinks something that's larger than their stomach? How many calories is in one? What about diabetics and drinking that much of something? More info might be useful here.
