Muslims across the world are preparing to celebrate the annual festival of Eid al-Adha or the Festival of Sacrifice. Eid al-Adha marks the end of the haj pilgrimage to Mecca by hundreds of millions of Muslims. The haj concludes with the ritual slaughter of goats, sheep and cattle in commemoration of the Prophet Abraham's readiness to sacrifice his son to show obedience to Allah.

Some 12,000 American muslims are expected to make the pilgrimage this year, which lasts from Sunday through Thursday.
