In 1968, the Navajo nation created the very first American Indian-controlled higher education institution to provide a first-rate college education to Native youth while preserving Native language and culture. Today there are more than 30 accredited tribal colleges and universities serving remote American Indian communities across the country. With its credo “Educating the Mind and Spirit,” the Denver-based American Indian College Fund is the nation’s largest provider of private scholarships for American Indian students. The Fund provides 6,000 scholarships annually for Native students seeking to better their lives and communities through education at tribal colleges and universities. Most tribal colleges are located on or near Indian reservations.
The Fund also transforms Indian higher education by funding and creating awareness of the unique, community-based accredited tribal colleges and universities, offering students access to knowledge, skills, and cultural values which enhance their communities and the country as a whole. Support for the tribal colleges ranges includes capital support and language and cultural preservation.
