One-Size-Fits-All Prison Sentencing Fits No One: End Mandatory Minimums!

Dear Members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees:
I am outraged by our country’s use of mandatory minimum sentences. Mandatory minimums are automatic prison terms decided by Congress, not judges. These predetermined prison sentences based solely on the weight of the drug and not on the individual case are creating a one-size-fits-all punishment. And since the only way to avoid a mandatory sentence is to snitch on someone else, our prisons are bursting at the seams with nonviolent drug offenders who cost taxpayers billions a year to support.
We’ve ruined enough lives and wasted enough money after 25 years of mandatory minimum sentences. It’s time to reverse course. I call on you to introduce federal legislation to reform mandatory minimum sentencing laws today! Let’s fix this problem!
Sincerely,
[Your name here]
