Community-supported agriculture (CSA) is a great way to support local farmers and have fresh, seasonal produce delivered to your doorstep weekly. Instead of buying produce grown thousands of miles away, CSAs create a direct link between consumers and nearby farms.
When you buy a share in a CSA, you are taking on some of that farmer’s risk, giving them support early in their growing season. In return, once harvesting begins you receive vitamin-rich, ripe vegetables and fruit grown close to your home. CSAs aren’t just limited to produce: they can include dairy products, eggs, even flowers.
For most CSAs, you do need to make an upfront payment but there are ways to make this an affordable long-term option. You can split a share with other families. Some even give you a discount for picking up your own produce instead of having it delivered or working on the farm.
