Remember that pay-what-you can restaurant that rocker Jon Bon Jovi planned to open in Red Bank, New Jersey?

Well Bon Jovi’s Soul Kitchen opened late last week to an overflow crowd.

The restaurant’s concept is simple: diners don’t see any prices on the menus. They’ve earned their meals based on volunteer service hours. Soul Kitchen pays its bills thanks to the generosity of customers who can afford the suggested donation.

“At a time when one in five households are living at or below the poverty level, and at a time when one out of six Americans are food insecure, this is a restaurant whose time has come. This is a place based on and built on community—by and for the community,” said Bon Jovi at the restaurant’s opening.
