Runner-up for 2007’s Oxford Word of the Year was ‘colony collapse disorder’ (CCD), an unexplained phenomenon in which worker bees disappear from their hives en masse. It’s estimated that one out of three things you eat require pollination — 80% of that by honey bee. This is a commercial process, not necessarily a natural one, requiring beekeepers to transport colonies from crop to crop. The direst warnings predict that, should crops go the way of the bees, we could all be on a bread and water diet before long.
