I’m a woman, and I’ll admit that I like seeing another woman in the presidential primary ring duking it out with the best of those Y-chromosome candidates - regardless of her politics. But does Hillary’s gender make her a better candidate for women than a male candidate? There’s a difference between wanting to see a woman have a fighting chance in the presidential race, and believing that a female president will by default best represent women’s interests while in office. Could a woman in the Oval Office work against furthering women’s rights, and might a man do the opposite? It’s possible. Take Clarence Thomas’ unyielding assault on affirmative action, for instance. When I’m in the voting booth, I’ll ask myself if Hillary’s politics best represent what is important to me and to my community, and try to avoid the the gender oversimplifications.
