Terri Irwin announced today that starting next year, she’s expanding the whale watching program she founded to honor her late husband, the wildlife show host Steve Irwin, to include “non-lethal research of whales in Antarctic waters,” according to the AP.Irwin’s goal is to disprove Japan’s claim that it’s necessary to kill whales “to properly gather information about their eating, breeding and migratory habits.” Japan has already backed down on its plan to kill 50 humpback whales under international pressure led by Australia, but is still planning to proceed with the slaughter of 1000 other whales, ostensibly for scientific purposes.”We are determined to show the Japanese they can stop all whaling, not just humpbacks,” Irwin told the AP.
