Benazir Bhutto killed in suicide attack

Benazir Bhutto was killed today in a suicide attack at a rally for the Pakistan People’s Party in the town of Rawalpindi. Bhutto was reportedly shot three times before a suicide bomber killed at least 15 others in the blast. Previous reports this morning stated that Bhutto was only wounded, but news of her death was released shortly after.

Bhutto had recently returned to Pakistan after ending her self-imposed exile in October. President Musharraf had agreed to a power-sharing arrangement, and to grant her amnesty from corruption charges. After her return, relations between Musharraf and Bhutto began to break down, as did the security situation in Pakistan. Bhutto had twice been Pakistan’s prime minister, and was the first woman leader of a Muslim-majority nation. Provincial and national assembly elections were scheduled to take place on January 8th.
