Child Killed From Video Game Moves

This story sent pangs to my heart.

Two teenagers have been arrested after killing a seven-year-old girl by immitating moves from the Mortal Kombat games say prosecutors. Heather Trujillo, 16, and Lamar Roberts, 17, “hit, kicked and body-slammed” Trujillo’s half sister, Zoe Garcia, until she lost consciousness. The two teens were supposed to be babysitting little Garcia, on December 6, when they seized the opportunity to drink alcohol and immitate Mortal Kombat moves on the child. Witnesses say Roberts performed a back kick on Garcia, from which she did not get up. He then cracked an egg in her mouth, apparently to check if she was faking unconsciousness. When Garcia regained consciousness Trujillo sent her to bed, according to the documents, but she stopped breathing 15 minutes later.

I’d like to blame the video game industry. I’d love to point a finger and say it’s all the fault of a multi-million dollar business and not blame two very young human beings. But, while the video game industry does have it’s fair share of absurdly violent flaws, the blame here most certainly goes on the two idiot teenagers who got drunk and killed a kid! They killed a kid! Even if the kid didn’t die, they beat up a kid?!

While my rage over the stupidity of this incident is strong I am sure it doesn’t even compare to the guilt these two teens are feeling.

  1. This story just makes me sick for more than one reason. The entertainment industry needs to take responsibility for the fact that it is creating product that is negatively impacting the mind’s of impressionable children. Furthermore, all that violence on screen does is desensitize people to the severity of a violent act. Also, this makes me ill because these children thought nothing of physically abusing a child that was young enough to require a sitter. Liquor or not, these children have no conscious. I’d like to know where the parents were and how it is that they raised these children. How could they: allow these kids to babysit when it’s obvious that neither had the maturity or mental stability to do so, gave them access to such violent video games, and raise murderers?
